Making Waves for CANSA
The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is hosting its first ‘CANSA Swim Relay’ on 8 September 2019 from 07:00 to 19:00. The event is a fundraiser as part of CANSA’s Relay For Life, East Rand event to help raise funds for the local CANSA Care Centres in Gauteng.
Sonia Pretorius, Volunteer organiser and cancer survivor, says “Every year over 115 000 people in South Africa are affected by cancer. We’re challenging participants to be part of swimming a total of 115 000 lengths to recognise these individuals touched by cancer and to raise awareness and funds for CANSA Care Centres in Gauteng. It’s also an opportunity to honour caregivers by swimming laps in a 12-hour event”
Swimmers needn’t be concerned about the weather as the event will be hosted in St Benedict’s School indoor pool situated in Bedfordview, East Rand. Swimmers must register by 31 August 2019 by contacting Kerry Eley on kerry.eley@yahoo.com. Participants pay R80 per person, per hour and receive a free sling bag. Swimmers are not limited to on one hour only and are encouraged to book more than one session. Supporters of swimmers are welcome and they pay R40 per adult and R20 per child u / 12 years.
Pretorius who is also a Global Hero of Hope ambassador (survivors who promote the CANSA Relay For Life movement) adds, “This event is aimed at your average swimmer who is keen to stay fit as well as serious swimmers who want to use this as a training session and be part of this amazing event. It’s a wonderful family get together where food stalls will be available for those who swim up an appetite and space for friends to cheer and support swimmers. So young and old, come and join us for a fun-filled experience to raise funds for education, care and support services.”
