Lavona Spiers: Global Hero of Hope (Survivor)

CANSA is honoured to introduce Lavona Spiers as a Relay For Life Global Hero of Hope. In late 2015, what began as common, seemingly harmless symptoms soon led to a life-altering diagnosis of colorectal cancer — news that Lavona never imagined would be hers. Faced with fear, uncertainty and the deep impact on her young family, she turned to faith, drawing strength, comfort and courage in one of the most challenging moments of her life.

“On the 29th of December 2015, I presented with common symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pains. I visited the GP and medication was prescribed. The discomfort continued. Unexplained weight loss and persistent change in bowel habit became a red flag. On the 26th of January 2016, I was admitted to hospital for a colonoscopy. I was breathless when the Gastroenterologist shared the news that I have colorectal cancer. The news cut through my heart like a sharp-edged sword. My husband burst out in tears while I just became silent. I turned my head to the white hospital wall and Isaiah 38 was my deliverance. I recognised God’s power over my life. In silent prayer I asked for healing. My kids were both still very young and the news was devastating to them. The tears of my family became my stepping stone to healing.

On the 4th of February 2016, I went for surgery. Chemotherapy was administered a month later. It was a completely new chapter of transformation because I never thought it would be me. I was always health conscious and valued healthy living. Dealing with the transformation, I had to adapt to constructive ways with key factors to resilience such as endurance, faith, trust, perseverance and hope.

In the face of my own trauma, I recognised during my first Relay For Life attendance, that you are not alone. The numerous real life examples of survivors inspired me. In gratitude for being in remission, I acknowledge the goodness of strength granted unto me. Positive thinking, strong coping skills, the ability to seek and accept support gave me a great start to accept and move forward. I am very pleased to be part of an inspiring Relay For Life team called Hope Warriors.

CANSA Relay For Life is a positive celebration for cancer survivors and caregivers. This was a new beginning in my life, an attitude of gratitude.”
