East Rand Community Called to Rise Together Against Cancer at CANSA Relay For Life 2026
The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) invites the East Rand community to come together in hope, remembrance and action at the CANSA Relay For Life East Rand event taking place, 9 May 2026, from 16:00 to 22:00 at Woodlands International College, Bartlett, Boksburg.
This special event forms part of CANSA’s 95th anniversary celebrations, marking nearly a century of service, support and advocacy in the fight against cancer in South Africa. Under the inspiring theme ‘Rise Together Against Cancer’, the event will unite cancer survivors, caregivers, families, friends, schools, businesses and community groups in a powerful show of solidarity.
Event Chair and leader volunteer, Anand Gounden, emphasises the importance of community involvement:
“Relay For Life is more than just an event – it’s a moving experience that celebrates survivorship, honours those we have lost, and inspires communities to take action. One of the most meaningful highlights includes the Survivors’ Lap, celebrating those who have faced cancer, followed by the Caregivers’ Lap, recognising the unwavering support of loved ones. The evening will also feature the poignant Luminaria Ceremony, where candles are displayed in remembrance and hope.”

Luminaria bags, which hold the tribute candles, are available as part of the entry fee and can be decorated with personal messages, photos, and memories. Bags will be sold at the event.
At the heart of Relay For Life is team participation. Community members are encouraged to form teams of 10 to 15 people – whether made up of friends, families, colleagues or schools – and take part in this symbolic journey. Team entries are R1 000 per team while day visitors pay R50 per adult | R25 per child.
Participants are encouraged not only to attend, but to actively fundraise in support of CANSA’s vital work.
“Relay For Life is a powerful reminder that no one faces cancer alone. As we celebrate CANSA’s 95th anniversary, we call on the East Rand community to stand with us – to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones, and take meaningful action. Every team that registers and every step taken helps us continue providing life-saving education, screening and care to those who need it most,” adds Gounden.
Funds raised through Relay For Life enable CANSA to continue delivering essential services, including cancer screening and early detection, tele counselling, support groups, home-based care, as well as the provision of wigs, prostheses and medical equipment.
Community members can support the event in many ways – by entering a team, attending as a visitor, volunteering their time, or contributing as a sponsor.
