South African Relayers honoured at the Global Spirit of Relay Awards
The Global Spirit of Relay is presented annually for global events taking place from 1 January to 31 December. All of the award winners must show an innovative approach to its role, making a distinct contribution to furthering the mission of their cancer organisation to save lives faster. The award winner embodies the passion of a Global Relay For Life ambassador year round helping to grow a purple army of grassroots volunteers working creating a world with more birthdays and less cancer.
There are 1 000 Relay For Life events taking place around the world annually, 500 000 teams are registered raising USD90 000 000 raised in 19 countries.
The following nominations from South African Relays for the Global Spirit of Relay awards were accepted:
- The Spirit of Relay Event Award – Relay For Life East London. Chairperson: Richard Patten
- The Spirit of Relay Staff Award – Anita Snyders: Relay For Life Pretoria
- The Spirit of Relay Team Award – Dutch Reform Church, Relay For Life Bethlehem
- The Spirit of Relay Volunteer Award – Anil Sookraj, Relay For Life Estcourt
We are very proud to announce that we received two honourable mentions:
In the Event category: Richard Patten, RFL East London;
And in the Volunteer category: Anil Sookraj, RFL Estcourt.
However, the most exciting news is that we had a winner as well.
We would like to congratulate Anita Snyders, our Staff Partner for RFL Pretoria for winning the Global Spirit of Relay Staff Award for 2012!

This award is presented to the one Staff Partner who exemplifies the supportive spirit of engaging their Event Committees to reach new levels of success in growth in income, committee engagement, team recruitment, survivor and caregiver recruitment and over-all event experience.

This award recognises a Relay For Life team that exemplifies the “True Spirit of Relay”. Teams who are nominated for this award have fully engaged all of its team members through fundraising, survivor and caregiver engagement, and knowledge of their organisation’s mission in the fight against cancer.

The Spirit of Relay – Volunteer Award recognises a Relay For Life volunteer that exemplifies the “True Spirit of Relay” by inspiring others through their devotion to Relay For Life and the mission of their organisation. This individual has truly made a difference in the fight against cancer. This individual takes initiative, has a positive attitude, serves as a mentor/role model, and makes a significant impact at the event and field level. The nominee exemplifies the statement: “We can choose to be affected by the world, or we can choose to affect the world.”
